After a tour of St. Joseph’s in September of 2019, Ian Matty, co-founder of the Mountain Lakes Public Library Makerspace, paired his student teams with Teacher and Assistive Technology Specialist Lauren Marron and her students to create and develop innovative, accessible designs to aid individuals who are blind and visually impaired.
Early this fall, upon a request from St. Joseph’s, their collaboration produced a 3D-printed tactile cover for the book Out of My Heart by Sharon M. Draper. A tactile book is a book that is read with the fingers. Various media are used to convey the media through touch, most commonly braille.
According to Ms. Marron, “The project brought life to a book cover, which are images that cannot be translated with braille.” Instead, with 3-D printing, Matty’s team translated a book cover for visually impaired students.
