Last week we kicked off Blindness Awareness Month

Last week we kicked off Blindness Awareness Month with our third annual flag raising at City Hill. This year we highlighted our student’s work in the creative arts, displaying art work and having two students read poems about their canes and blindness that they had written with themselves. Thank you so much to Councilmen Boggiano and Maryanne Donahue, Executive Director of Peace Ministries for your kind words about our school, staff, and students 💙💚🧑‍🦯👩‍🦯👨‍🦽👩‍🦼

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our dear friend, Emmy-nominated actor John Amos. Best known for his roles on Good Times, Roots and Coming to America, Mr. Amos was also a talented writer. During his visits to St. Joseph’s he took time to read his book, A World Without Color, to our students. His strong and animated delivery captivated the interest of even the youngest students and brought the story to life. He was very pleased that our specialists transcribed his book into braille so all of our children could enjoy it.His kindness, gentle manner, and sincere compassion for our special students will forever be an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed.We extend our most sincere condolences to his family, friends and to all of his fans around the world.

We went on a Dino dig, made s’mores by the campfire, lit the Olympic torch and competed in the SJSB Olympic Games, learned about some of our favorite Disney characters, and did some yummy arts and crafts throughout the weeks. This week we recognized Dr. Hemant Shah for his generous contributions to the school. In recognition for his generosity, the school’s unique sensory room has been named in his honor as the “Dr. Hemant Shah Sensory Theater”. His generosity and his dedication to the pursuit of education led him to team with St. Joseph’s School for the Blind to help ensure the continuation of specialized services for children with disabilities.
