Educational Excellence and
Compassionate Care since 1891

Tamira Chapman, M.A. Ed., Principal

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our Education Program at St. Joseph’s School for the Blind. For more than 130 years, we have proudly served the Jersey City community, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child can truly live out our motto, “Learning to Be All We Can Be.”

Our dedicated team works tirelessly to create a safe, caring, and compassionate learning community. At the heart of everything we do are our students and their families. Together, we strive to ensure that each child receives the individualized support they need to thrive.

Our curriculum is designed to meet the highest standards, including the Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards, New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) Essential Elements, and the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). In addition, our students also receive support from our Braille and Literacy instructor.

Beyond academics, students enjoy enriching experiences in Art, Music, Physical Education, and Health, as well as Friday afternoon social and recreational clubs. For students aged 14 and older, we offer Pre-vocational and Life Skills classes, Community-Based Instruction (CBI), Work-Based Learning (WBL), and Structured Learning Experiences (SLE) under the guidance of our Transition Coordinator.

We also provide a wide range of therapy and specialty services, including Speech-Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Orientation & Mobility, counseling, and health services. Our state-of-the-art facilities feature a Sensory Room, Therapeutic Swimming Pool, Media Center, full-size gymnasium, assistive technology library, and an outdoor playground complete with a sensory garden and wheelchair-accessible swing.

I invite you to reach out to me with any questions or to schedule a tour. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the wonderful opportunities that await your child at St. Joseph’s School for the Blind!

Sincerely,

Tamira Chapman, M.A. Ed.
