What an exciting day for our students and clients as they walked together to celebrate their 15th Annual Walk-A-Thon!
Staff, family members, friends and community partners came out in large numbers to cheer them on and support their independence.
Event Co-Chairperson Nidia Cartagena, who initiated the original event and has spearheaded it each year since, was overwhelmed by the support. “Like any special event, our Walk-A-Thon is a huge undertaking. Our students, took on a big role to make this anniversary walk extra special. It is their way of giving back to their school. They take great pride in assisting with the event and help make it an enjoyable day,” she said. Student Ana Centeno, who has served on the Walk-A-Thon committee for the past two years, said, “It was a great Walk-a-thon, we had all of the families and friends join us. We love the support from the community and wish next year more can join us.” Corporate partners, local businesses, families and private donors supported the students by filling the pages of our journal and joining them on their walk.
This year’s event was dedicated to Teachers Assistant, Esther Suarez who retired after 42 years of continuous service to the students of St. Joseph’s. Executive Director David Feinhals said, “Throughout her career at St. Joseph’s, Esther touched the lives of our students and staff alike. Her professionalism was surpassed only by her dedication and commitment to our students’ welfare.”
For Esther and so many before her, the decision to retire was not an easy one. “Working at St. Joseph’s has always been about the students. It’s the reason we’re here – to give them a better life.” St. Joseph’s Walk-A-Thon has become a symbol of hope, courage and a more independent life for our students. Ms. Cartagena said, “We’ll keep walking until each student reaches their greatest potential!”
