New art teacher Athena Toledo has garnered an impressive resume of positions in the art field, but it is the enthusiasm of the students at St. Joseph’s that inspires her to go beyond her personal experiences. “The students are surprising and joyful! They bring something different to each project,” she said. Ms. Toledo, has also worked with senior adults with neurodiversity, “I’ve worked with adults who are blind, visually impaired and have learned some adaption processes that I’m using with the students. It’s important that I use a variety of materials in their projects, especially those with texture to make them accessible. I believe that through the students’ artwork, a bridge can be built to connect them with others.”
Ms. Toledo also expressed gratitude to the school’s founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. “I’m grateful for their legacy and for the opportunities they have provided me. There is a good energy in this building, a strong sense of community and supportive staff. These are just a few reasons why I love being here!”
