A Day in the Life

Breakfast Time (8:00 – 8:50 A.M.)

A family style breakfast is served every morning to thechildren. During breakfast children are encouraged to serve themselves. This allows them to feel a sense of independence and provides a smooth transitionfrom home to school in the beginning of the day.

Greeting Time (8:50 – 9:00 A.M.)

During Greeting Time the children join their teachers andfriends at the classroom Message Board. This promotes early literacy throughthe use of symbols. The teachers use the message board to describe the eventsof the day by using symbols and pictures.

Small Group Time (9:00– 9:15 A.M.)

A group of 7 – 8 children meet with a teacher, at thistime the children are encouraged to experiment with materials, problem solveand learn new skills. The activities are planned according to the children’s interest, needs and assessments. The children are given this opportunity to talk freely about any ideas they might have while they explore with thematerials they have chosen.

Planning Time (9:15 –9:20 A.M.)

At this time of the day children are given the opportunity to set a goal. They make choices about where in the classroom they want towork and what they want to do. Children are able to carry out their plansduring Work Time.

Work Time (9:20 – 10:20 A.M.)

Children work in their area of interest in the classroom. Children are encouraged to work with materials and the teachers take thisopportunity to work alongside the children and observe them. The teachersalso take this opportunity to provoke language development and thought.

Clean up Time (10:20 – 10:25 A.M.)

At this time children are expected to return all materials to their proper place. This helps children develop a sense of responsibility.

Recall Time (10:25 – 10:30 A.M.)

The children reflect on what they accomplished during worktime and who they worked with.

Bathroom/ Fix Cots (10:30 – 10:45 A.M.)

Teachers help the children gain independence by assistingthem with putting their sheets on their cots.

Outdoor Time (10:45– 11:45 A.M.)

Everyday the children enjoy free play outdoors. Duringoutdoor time the children are encouraged to be active by climbing, hopping,jumping, running and exploring on the play ground.

Lunch Time (12:00 – 12:30 P.M.)

Lunch is served for the children family style. Thechildren are encouraged to be independent and serve themselves. During lunchteachers sit with the children and initiate conversations about meaningfulexperiences. At this time the Teacher assist children in brushing theirteeth.

Nap Time (12:30 – 1:30 P.M.)

Children are given an hour to rest or engage in quietactivities. This is an important part of the day that is essential for thechildren’s physical and emotional growth.

SnackTime (1:30 – 1:45 P.M.)

In the afternoon the children enjoy a healthy snack withtheir friends.

Choice Time (1:45 – 2:10 P.M.)

The children are encouraged to choose table toys or booksof their choice. Teachers take this opportunity to observe the children andrecord what the children discuss about their day.

Clean up/ Bathroom (2:10– 2:15 P.M.)

Children return toys to their proper place and use thebathroom.

Large Group (2:15 – 2:45 P.M.)

At this time children come together as a class and exploreby moving their bodies in different ways. During Large Group the childrenlearn about taking turns they also develop a sense of community.
